Announced yesterday the release of the OSX Public Preview of the email Client Mail Pilot, this unique way of approaching mail, actually works. In my article “Rethinking Email” I was very much of the opinion that the manner in which mail is handled needs to improved upon but to avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Mail Pilot is actually a fairly radical rethink but it doesn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. However, it does make you more efficient in the handling of mail.
If you’re going to do email, it can’t be just done on the IOS platform the way main third party vendors of IOS email are doing. The experience has to be consistent across platforms.
The smartest thing Mindsense did, the makers of Mail Pilot, was port it to OSX. However, they didn’t just do a straight port of the IOS product. They made the OSX product better. What we can hope then is that these improvements all make their way into the IOS products. Then I think Mail Pilot will fly. It won’t be for everyone but many will be able to take advantage of its way of working.
Further, since Mindsense didn’t throw the baby out with the bath water, there’s no reason to think that you still could not use a traditional client in conjunction with Mail Pilot. Why you would I’m not sure but it can be done. I believe this is going to be a winner.
